Greer Relief and Resources Agency, Inc. was chartered in 1936 to help neighbors in crisis during the Great Depression.  Greer Relief and Resources Agency, Inc. provides emergency assistance to individuals and families residing in Greer, Taylors, Duncan, Lyman & Wellford.

The Emergency Assistance Program is designed to give in-kind assistance, financial assistance and counseling to the needy. It is our goal to help clients identify their core problem so that we are able to address the issue together rather than simply treating the client's current “need” (food, utilities, rent, etc..). This is done through interviewing the client and making appropriate referrals to community partner agencies and professionals in the community. This program is a "hand up" not a "hand out". Along with our financial assistance comes responsibility. The client must show a desire to change their present situation of dependency to one of independence and must follow through with the agreed upon plan to get assistance. This program is not for the client who receives government subsidies and is not wanting or trying to change, it is for the person who is falling through the cracks of our system. Emergency Assistance clients usually fall withn one of these situations:
  • They are on a fixed income (i.e. disability / social security) without the ability to increase their income to pay for the unexpected.
  • They are unemployed; either on unemployment or maxed out of their unemployment beneits, and still without a job.
  • They have a minimum wage job and have experienced a family crisis which keeps them out of work.  If they do not work, they do not get paid.  These clients not only has the problem of not receiving a pay check, but also the added expense of the crisis.
The J. Verne Smith Human Resource Center, has been a wonderful, successful collaboration between state and local non-profit agencies.  Senator J. Verne Smith established the Center with the purpose of providing access to health and human services for the people in the Greater Greer area of Greenville and Spartanburg counties.  Since 1991 the J. Verne Smith Center has served the community for job, health, family, disability and emergency services. There are seven residential partner agencies providing services; DSS: Greenville County, DSS: Spartanburg County, DHEC: Health Department and WIC programs, Greer Free Medical Clinic, Greer Relief & Resources Agency, Medicaid, and SC Commission for the Blind.  One partner agency, Narcotics Anonymous, uses the facility for evening meetings.  If you are interested in a tour of the facility contact Caroline Robertson, (864) 848-5355 / This email address is being protected from spambots.
